A year-long investigation into coercive behaviour within education across the Netherlands and the UK. Stories, research, and accountability, from the people who were rarely asked.
The Investigation
A year-long investigation across the Netherlands and the UK, collecting the stories of students, parents, teachers, and professionals who have experienced, witnessed, or questioned decisions that may have caused harm within education. Four examples shape the inquiry:
Parents ask for adjustments to accommodate their child. The school reframes those requests as the parents' 'vision' and uses it as grounds for rejection. Who gave permission to redefine what was asked?
A teenage girl needs more than four minutes for a toilet break because she is menstruating. She takes longer and receives detention. Who decides four minutes is enough?
A student receives detention for arriving without the correct pencils. What is being taught when punishment harms a student's ability to participate more than the missing pencils ever could?
A teacher recognises a student needs support but feels unable to act because of expectations from higher up. Who is accountable when meeting institutional requirements overrides the student's needs?
