Understanding Burnout

What I have learned from clinical burnout, from my own experience and from more than twelve years of conversations with people in the middle of it, is that being selfish comes fast when you finally hit the wall.

Not gradually. Not as a considered decision arrived at after reflection and journaling and permission from a professional.

Fast.

Because there are no other options left.

The person who could not say no for years, who gave without return, who overrode every signal their body sent because the rules said to keep going, suddenly finds that the system has made the decision for them. There is nothing left to give. The performance is over not because they chose to stop but because the biology stopped it.

And in that moment, selfishness is not an icky word.

It is the only word.

It is also, and this is the part that tends to arrive with grief attached, something that should have been there a long time ago. Not as a crisis response. As a baseline. As the ordinary, unremarkable, biologically correct practice of a person who knows that their own resources are finite and worth protecting.

Clinical burnout has a way of teaching this that nothing else quite manages. Because it removes the choice. The person does not decide to become selfish. They discover that they already had to be, and that everything that happened before was the cost of not knowing that yet.

This book is built from that discovery. From what it looks like biologically, from how the rules against it get installed, from why the system eventually forces the issue, and from what becomes possible when selfishness stops being something to apologise for and starts being something to build from.
